Most of the people protesting want to stop giving money to companies that help Israel and the fighting in Gaza.
On Wednesday at UCLA, people were told to leave or they would get in trouble. The protesters stayed where they were and kept shouting support for Palestine.
UCLA said that on Thursday and Friday, they will have fewer things happening on campus and all classes will be held online instead.
The leader of California was upset because the police took a long time to help when a fight happened at UCLA between people who support Israel and people who support Palestine. The fight happened before the police arrived and the pro-Israeli group hurt the pro-Palestinian students.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay that the police took too long to help.
The police took away people who were supporting Palestine from Columbia University.
State officials and university leaders sent security guards to the camp where people were supporting Palestine after there was fighting on Tuesday night. Some people who saw what happened said the guards took a little while to arrive, and there was a short time when no one was there to help.
Trump said that protests on college campuses are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th. Biden is trying to make a peace agreement in Gaza to avoid criticism.
The police just stood on the grass and wouldn’t move when we asked for their help, said UC Divest at LA, a group in the camp.
The people who were upset started to go home two hours after the bad thing happened, and the police were able to make everything calm again on Wednesday (May 1).
Governor Newsom said that it’s not okay to be violent or break the law when you are speaking out.
He said that the people who caused the trouble should be punished, like getting in trouble with the law or being kicked out of school. The police at UCLA left because there weren’t enough of them compared to the crowd.
The police had to call for help from other areas like California and Los Angeles to help them with a problem. It took them three hours to fix the problem and make everything safe again.
Columbia University has stopped some students from protesting for now.
There was a big fight at a famous school in the US at night, right after the police made student protestors leave a building at another school in New York.
The protests at Columbia about what’s happening in Gaza have led to similar protests at other universities in the country.
Many schools in different states are having protests asking their schools to stop working with Israel and companies that are making money from the war.
The university officials said they had a lot of security in the area, but they didn’t want to stop the mostly calm protests. On Tuesday, a big group supporting Israel came to campus in black clothes and white masks and tried to take down the barriers.
The people with masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with smelly spray, and ripped down their signs.
College leaders are feeling more and more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because these protests are happening all over the country.
Children, some people were protesting at Columbia University because they support the people of Palestine. The mayor of New York City said that some of the protestors were not students from the university, but came from outside to cause trouble.
